AMERICAN HOTELS

XV BEACON HOTEL

Between the Freedom Trail and other cultural and historical landmarks, sits the XV Beacon Hotel, a classic representation of mixing the past with the new. Located on the site where a former Boston merchant built his mansion in 1722, the current Beaux Arts building was designed in 1903.

The XV Beacon is acclaimed for preserving its historical charm (like original cage elevators) while adorning it with modern styles and amenities (like high-tech gadgets and chauffeured Mercedes-Benzes). Be sure to visit “The Fed” (short for Federalist) restaurant for New England cuisine and the wine cellar, located in the original foundation of the 1722 building.

Chicago Fairmont Hotel

The Fairmont is just one American hotel cashing in on luxury medical tourism, which constitutes a $16 billion industry.  The Fairmont’s owner, Strategic Hotels & Resorts, did some research and found that most American patients, if given the option, prefer to stay in the country because of the cost of overseas travel and for the access to home-grown technology and medical expertise.
The Fairmont is teaming with Dr. Mitch Sheinkop, head of the joint replacement program at the Neurological & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago, who arranges post-operative hotel stays for interested patients .  According to Mike Phares, the Fairmont’s marketing director, “We make it easy for rehab technicians to come and go from the hotel to work with patients.”
Pricey, but a little pampering after a hospital stay has strong appeal to the affluent patient.  So far, the Fairmont is limiting medical recovery stays to orthopedic cases, but plans to target plastic and cosmetic surgical patients next.

SOUTH AMERICAN COPACABANA HOTEL

This hotel is just 350 metres from Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, and 500 metres from General Osório Subway Station. It features a rooftop pool, air-conditioned rooms and a rich breakfast buffet. Wi-Fi is free.

LATIN AMERICAN HOTEL

ANDREWS HOTEL

It's something of a mystery as to why American hotels continue to describe themselves as 'European-style'; seasoned travellers are aware that, in Europe itself, that often means creaky bedsprings, rude staff and a toilet several miles down the corridor. Still, this handsome old Queen Anne structure, formerly the opulent Sultan Turkish Baths, isn't on that particular radar. Guest rooms are well kept, if hardly stylish; the public spaces are considerably more charming; and Fino, the hotel's restaurant, is a decent spot. The main drawback: walls are on the thin side - but that's true of many vintage buildings.
